"The Anomaly" (The Guardian 04/07/14)

The Anomaly *
Dir: Noel Clarke. With: Noel Clarke, Ian Somerhalder, Alexis Knapp, Brian Cox. 97 mins. Cert: 15

The Noel Clarke oeuvre continues to expand in ambition, without demonstrating much by way of basic competency. Armed with American guest stars and CGI, this one blunders down the Memento-Looper-Quantum Leap route, as a microchipped Clarke awakens in multiple realities and tries to figure out what connects a nefarious biotech firm to the Russian mob. Our hero’s clueless expression comes naturally; elsewhere, narrative clarity matters less to Clarke than squeezing more naked ladies and product placement into shot, and even the trailer-eyeing slo-mo punch-ups look terribly like a post-production fudge designed to usher us past fundamentally unconvincing staging. He’ll doubtless keep trying.

The Anomaly opens in selected cinemas from today.
