"Infini" (Guardian 18/09/15)

Infini **

Dir: Shane Abbess. With: Daniel MacPherson, Grace Huang, Luke Hemsworth, Luke Ford. 110 mins. Cert: 15

Back when distributors exercised some quality control, a noisy, derivative Aussie sci-fi such as this would have happily gone straight-to-video. In 2015, it gains a multi-platform release, with a minor Hemsworth brother leading a troop of spacetime-hopping roughnecks to a parasite-strewn environment on a search-and-rescue mission. A lot of sub-Alien stalking around old Farscape sets follows; this is preferable to the jacked-up jargon-gabbling and who’s-the-alpha grunting by which writer-director Shane Abbess inflates the stakes. February’s Predestination suggested some smart, filigreed SF is emerging from Down Under, but Infini is too busy generating crashes and bangs to clarify the rules of its own skin-flaying game. It’s a Non-Event Horizon.

Infini is now playing in cinemas nationwide.
